What is Maharashtra Shop Act Registration?

The Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017 extends to the whole of the State of Maharashtra. Section 6 of the Act mandates every establishment "employing 10 or more workers" to register themselves under this act. 8The registration can be obtained for a validity ranging from 1 year to 10 years What if an establishment employs less than 10 workers? Establishments with less than 10 workers are required to give an intimation of having commenced the business. The good part here is that this intimation stays valid till the time number of employees engaged in that establishment remains less than 10 or the date of closure of business whichever is earlier.

Is Shop Act Registration mandatory for everyone?

As per the Act, shop act registration is applicable to every "establishment" which includes the following:

* Business * Traders * Manufacturers * Journalistic work * Printing work * Medical Practitioners * Architects * Engineers * Accountants * Tax Consultants * Any technical and Professional Consultant * Society registered under the Societies Act, 1860 * Charitable Trust which carries any business or trade or profession * Shops * Residential Hotels * Restaurants * Theatres * Other places of public amusement and entertainment Thus, the above entities are mandatorily required to apply for the shop act.
